Harry Maguire 'will leave Man United' with Spurs tipped as good fit… but not Arsenal

Harry Maguire has been tipped to leave Manchester United following the World Cup and join a Premier League rival.

The centre-back appears to have found his confidence again with a number of assured performances in Qatar, and talkSPORT Breakfast host Ally McCoist expects him to depart Old Trafford in the January transfer window.

Gareth Southgate’s decision to call Maguire up to his World Cup squad and even give him a place in the starting XI raised plenty of eyebrows due to his lack of action for the Red Devils, but the 29-year-old repaid the manager’s faith with some solid displays at the back.

Maguire has arguably been one of the strongest defenders at the World Cup this winter, and appears to have breathed life into his career that had been going stagnant at United.

The club captain lost his starting spots to Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane this season, with new boss Erik ten Hag quickly making his mind up about the centre-half.

Ten Hag has since challenged Maguire to replicate his faultless England form in a Red Devils shirt, admitting he was encouraged by his improved performances having ‘performed badly’ during his spell in charge so far.

But McCoist doesn’t see the Three Lions star staying put for very long.

Asked what Maguire will do if he still can’t get in the United team following his successful World Cup, the Rangers legend told the talkSPORT Breakfast: “I think he will move.

“I don’t think he may move, I’ll go one further – I think he WILL move. 

“He isn’t going to hang around – he wants to play.

“I don’t think there are any guarantees that he’s going to march back into the Manchester United team, not in front of Varane and Martinez.”

And, when asked about a possible next destination for the centre-back, McCoist suggested a move to north London, but with Tottenham – admitting he would not get into Premier League leaders Arsenal’s team.

“Well, that’s up for debate,” McCoist when asked about his possible next club.

“Clearly he will want to play. Straight away off the top of my head, I’d say he’s good enough for Spurs. Arsenal? Maybe not at this moment in time.

“But he’s been one of England’s best players at the World Cup.”

However, talkSPORT colleague Andy Townsend believes Maguire has a shot at regaining his place in the United side, as he’ll return to the club as a player with his confidence reborn.

“He will be going back to Manchester United in much better shape mentally,” the talkSPORT pundit said.

“He will go back with a completely different frame of mind, He’s found a lot more of his game, there’s still a lot of room for improvement, but he’s found his game, which had deserted him for a long while.

“It’s been very, very tough for him, so fair play to Harry for that. He didn’t let anybody down at the World Cup, he did his job and he did it well.

“He’s still got gears to find, but he will go back to Manchester United now a different player.”
