Liverpool 'agree' Fernandez transfer and pip Manchester rivals to Argentina star

Liverpool have reportedly won the race to sign Benfica and Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

The 21-year-old has had a meteoric rise in recent months after signing for Benfica in June from Argentinian giants River Plate.

He helped lead the Portuguese side to top spot in a Champions League group containing Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain.

His quick adaptation to Europe earned him a place in Lionel Scaloni’s World Cup squad and has featured in every game in Qatar so far, registering one goal and one assist.

But it looks as though Fernandez’s World Cup heroics will be Benfica’s downfall according to La Capital, who claim the Reds have an agreement in place for his signature.

The report revealed that Liverpool have already held negotiations with Benfica and an arrangement is in place for his arrival in summer 2023.

Liverpool are believed to have swooped quickly for the Argentine sensation to fend off interest from Manchester United and City, who were expected to show an interest.

La Capital states: “Liverpool accelerated the efforts to incorporate Enzo Fernández and has already signed a pre-agreement with Benfica, the Portuguese club that has the federative rights of the young midfielder of the Argentine national team, who earned a place among the starters of Lionel Scaloni’s team during the World Cup in Qatar.

“The English club in this way anticipated two other greats in the Premier League, Manchester United and Manchester City, institutions that had also planned to add the former River and Defensa y Justicia since June 2023.”
