Lloris reveals message sent to Kane after World Cup exit, says he should be 'proud'

France captain Hugo Lloris insists Tottenham teammate Harry Kane will bounce back from his World Cup heartache and continue to shine for club and country.

The England skipper blazed a crucial 84th-minute penalty over the bar with the Three Lions 2-1 down in Saturday’s World Cup quarter-final against France.

Kane had already beaten Lloris from the spot earlier in the second half but was unable to repeat the feat that would have likely sent the game to extra time.

But it wasn’t to be for Gareth Southgate’s side and Lloris who last week revealed his close off-pitch friendship with Kane, described the difficult task of consoling the Spurs striker in the moments after the game.

“We had a text after the game,” Lloris said. “But it was not easy to find the words straight after the game. I think he needed some rest.

“It’s a difficult time obviously for the English national team and for Harry but he can be proud for what he’s done for the national team during this World Cup.

“In football history many top players missed important penalties in their career. Players like Leo Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, like Kylian Mbappe.

“But I have no doubt Harry will keep his chin up and he will help Tottenham and the national team to shine.”

The two will reconvene in north London when the World Cup comes to a close on Sunday and whilst Kane is back in the UK licking his wounds, Lloris has plenty of unfinished business in Qatar.

France take on Morocco on Wednesday – live on talkSPORT – with a place in a second successive World Cup final at stake.

Les Bleus are looking to retain the trophy they won in Russia four-year ago and captain Lloris is hoping he can get his hands on football’s biggest prize for the second time.

Morocco have upset Belgium, Spain and Portugal en route to becoming the first African nation to progress to the last four in the history of the tournament so will be no pushovers.

Lloris, who at the weekend surpassed Lilian Thuram as France’s most-capped player by making his 143rd international appearance, feels the unprecedented performance of the Atlas Lions already represents success but has no doubt they will want more.

“I believe that both teams have plenty to lose,” said the 35-year-old. “It’s a semi-final of a World Cup, it’s a unique opportunity to go to the final.

“Obviously it’s already a success for Morocco to be at this stage of the competition but, believe me, they won’t stop, they just want to carry on and to become even more heroes for the Moroccan country.

“In our side, we prepare for the demands of a semi-final of the World Cup, it doesn’t matter who is the opponent.

“We just try to put the focus, the energy, the concentration and all of our strength into this game to make sure we will not have any regrets at the end.”

Should France see off surprise package Morocco, a final against 2018 runners-up Croatia or a Lionel Messi-inspired Argentina awaits Didier Deschamps’ side.

But for Kane, it will be a short period of downtime before thoughts turned to the resumption of the Premier League on Boxing Day when Spurs travel to Brentford as they continue their push for a top-four place.
