Wayne Rooney remains adamant Lionel Messi is the greatest player to grace the game, despite playing with Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United.
The Argentina skipper was pivotal in helping his nation book their place in the World Cup final, following a 3-0 victory over Croatia in the semi-finals.

Messi netted from the penalty spot to open the scoring, and later provided an assist for Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez to fire home, to help send his nation into the World Cup final.
Ex-Manchester United star Rooney later took to social media to praise the 34-year-old following yet another standout display.
He referenced a tweet which he posted back in 2012, in which he said: ‘Messi is a joke. For me the best ever.’
The tweet had been posted when Messi found the back of the net five times against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League last-16.
England’s joint-top goalscorer took to social media after Messi’s dazzling display against Croatia, saying: ‘Nothing has changed,’ with an emoji of a goat, again labelling him as the ‘greatest of all time’.

The ex-United striker has backed Messi to finally add the World Cup to his glisterning trophy cabinet.
“Winning the Copa America last year will have given them confidence and has taken a bit of pressure off them,” he previously told The Times.
“The climate will suit them too. The only thing they are missing is a No.9, that focal point in attack, but I think they will be really dangerous.
“Everyone has different views on Messi and Ronaldo but I have said many times that I think Messi is the best.
“I have watched lots of videos of Diego Maradona, who was a similar player, but Messi is better.
“He has everything, the way he controls games, his dribbling, his assists, whereas Ronaldo is more of a goalscorer.”
