Ronaldo 'not retiring from Portugal' and Mourinho could coach him at Euro 2024

Cristiano Ronaldo will not retire from international football with Portugal, it has been reported.

The 37-year-old’s career is currently in a state of limbo, Ronaldo leaving the pitch in tears following Portugal’s World Cup exit.

He is without a club – a controversial exit from Manchester United, followed his explosive interview with Piers Morgan.

Portugal were knocked out by Morocco in quarter-finals of the World Cup, suffering a 1-0 defeat on Saturday.

Since their elimination in Qatar, question marks remain over the future of Ronaldo.

At club level, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is awaiting offers from Champions League clubs.

Ronaldo had been subject of an offer from Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr, which would see him pocket £173million per season.

However, reports in Ronaldo’s homeland claim his international future is a lot more certain.

According to CM Journal, he intends to continue playing for his nation, and already informed Portugal chiefs of his decision.

While his national team boss Fernando Santos’ job remains in doubt, he has set his sights on leading his country at Euro 2024.

After being axed and amongst the substitutes for Portugal’s final two matches at the World Cup, he remains adamant on reclaiming his place in the side.

Numerous reports have linked Jose Mourinho with the national team post, and Ronaldo, who is the all-time leading goalscorer in internationals, could be handed a lifeline.

Mourinho may have been linked with taking over, but a move could also see him remain in charge of Serie A giants Roma, too.

Ronaldo and Mourinho have a close relationship from their time at Real Madrid, and the pair could end up leading Portugal’s Euro 2024 charge.
